Biking Köln

One of my favorite river cruise memories took place in Cologne, Germany, on a warm summer day with my 13-year-old daughter. Our ship docked right in the city center—just steps from the famous Cologne Cathedral—which made it incredibly easy to step off and start our adventure.

The river cruise line provided complimentary bikes, and we set off along the Rhine, riding through lively city streets and peaceful riverside paths. Cologne (or Köln, as it’s known locally) is wonderfully bike-friendly, and we had a great time exploring. We crossed one of the city’s many bridges and looped back over the iconic Hohenzollern Bridge, taking in panoramic views of the cathedral and the sparkling river below.

After our ride, we treated ourselves to a classic local lunch: crispy potato cakes, smoked salmon, and a cold Kölsch beer (just for me, of course!). It was the perfect way to experience Cologne—active, scenic, and full of local flavor.

These are the kinds of moments river cruising makes possible—effortless access, authentic experiences, and memories that last long after the trip is over. When I help clients plan their journeys, I draw from experiences just like this.

If Cologne, the Rhine, River Cruising, or Europe at large is on your bucket list, I’d love to hear from you. Visit my River Cruise homepage at the link below and schedule a call.

Cheers!
