Český Krumlov - The Unexpected Delight on the Danube
When I sail on a river cruises, I always look forward to day three on the Danube (Eastbound). It’s the day everyone talks about—the day to visit Salzburg. You’ve probably imagined it yourself: strolling the streets where “The Sound of Music” was filmed or snapping photos of the old town that fills every #Salzburg Instagram post.
But here’s the little dilemma no one mentions: in Salzburg, Sundays are quiet. With its deep Catholic roots, most shops close, and the usual energy of the city fades for the day of rest. My wife and I ran into this on one of my hosted sailings—and it caught many guests by surprise.
Thankfully, there was another option—a place most people skip without a second thought: Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic.
We took the scenic 90-minute coach ride through the hills and arrived at this beautifully preserved medieval town—buzzing with life, even on a Sunday. Locals and families filled the streets and the Vltava River, tubing and kayaking right through the center of town.
We wandered the winding lanes, climbed to the church above the rooftops, and found beer, schnitzel, and fresh pastries waiting for us.
Funny enough, this unplanned stop turned out to be the highlight of the trip—authentic, lively, and absolutely unforgettable.
